Understanding the Need for Sexual Health in Sex Addiction and Porn Addiction Related Therapy

The Significance of Sexual Health Principles

Implementing sexual health principles is a pivotal step in the recovery journey. It involves cultivating a positive, honest, and respectful relationship with sexuality. It promotes self-awareness, and sets the foundation for a balanced and fulfilling life. Our therapists are committed to guiding you through this transformative process.

The Sexual Health Principles We Promote

At PBH, we have spent years examining sexual health principles promoted by others and engaging in scholarly debate concerning the optimal set of principles to promote with clients. We are proud to work with a list that promotes sexual health while being tied to universal principles that transcent culture, sexual diversity, and politics. Similar to sexual health principles adopted by the OCSB model, the following are the IPSB Sexual Health Principles:

  • Consent: All humans have a right to bodily autonomy. Affirmative consent of all involved is necessary in sexual interactions. Consent also requires the absence of duress. The presence of duress, coercion, force, or obligation negate consent.

  • Non-Exploitation: Sexual behavior should not take advantage of vulnerabile people or utilize power or control without affirmative consent.

  • Safety: Sexual behavior should not create uncalculated risk for physical injury, sexually transmitted infection, or unintentional pregnancy.

  • Sex-Positivity: Healthy sexual attitudes hold sexuality as a fundamentally positive force in life. Importantly, this extends to one's view of thier own sexuality and their acceptance of themselves as a sexual being. Those who view their sexuality shamefully risk loss of control over it.

  • Honesty: Sex is a vulnerable activity. When honesty is absent, or deception is present, it creates a relational dynamic that is unhealthy.

  • Mutuality: Sex should be for the enjoyment of all involved. Mutuality involves respect and both giving and recieving pleasure.

  • Fulfillment: Sex should be engage in a manner that is fulfilling and a source of joy in life. It is not healthy when sexual behavior leaves a person feeling empty, disgusted, or ashamed.

Integrating Sexual Health Principles: A Collaborative Process

Collaborative Goal Setting

In therapy, we embark on a collaborative journey of goal setting, aligning with the IPSB principles of sexual health. This process involves exploring your values, desires, and aspirations, laying the groundwork for a personalized plan that reflects your authentic self.

Identifying and Challenging Unhelpful Beliefs

Unhelpful beliefs surrounding sexuality can contribute to percieved "addictive" or "out-of-control" behaviors. Our therapists work with you to identify and challenge these beliefs, fostering a shift towards healthier perspectives that align with sexual health principles.
